The Global Sanitation Challenge and Re-inventing the Toilet

Prof. Yu-Ling Cheng (U of T)

Yu-Ling Cheng is the Director of the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN), Distinguished Professor of Global Engineering, and Professor of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto.  CGEN is the focal point and major driver within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering for preparing engineering graduates to meet challenges, responsibilities and opportunities in a globally sustainable future. Under her leadership, CGEN has developed new courses and academic programs in global engineering and is enabling global engineering research within the Faculty in areas that include food and nutrition security, water and sanitation, shelter, and diagnostics for public health. She is the PI on a project to  address a “re-invent the toilet” challenge posed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She is a member the Teaching Academy at the University of Toronto.
